Steps for aqualine fibreglass pool resurfacing renovation
  1. Pool water is pumped out and the surface is prepared for Fibreglass resurfacing. 
  2. Application of Vinyl Ester primer coat (substrate adhesion coat)  
  3. Application of Vinyl Ester / Fibreglass reinforced laminate 
  4. Application of Vinyl Ester filler coat (chemical barrier and enhances the quality of the finished surface) 
  5. Application of Aquaguard ® top coat, the smooth colourful protective barrier.   
  6. After the filling of your swimming pool you will be ready to dive in and enjoy your 'new pool'. 

Resurfacing Marblesheen or Concrete Pools in Detail

Marblesheen, pebblecrete and concrete pools that are over 20 years old will require resurfacing. Different makes of pools will require different amount and types of repairs prior to resurfacing with a new Aquaglaze Fibreglass skin.The types of issue that can appear on an old Marblesheen or Concrete pools are:

1 Pop offs / drummy areas: 
Pop offs / drummy areas presents as blistering coating which eventually falls off and leaves holes in the coating.  
The areas where the drummy areas have come away will need to be filled with render or bogg. Drummy areas will be removed and filled.

2 Concrete cancer (Rusting Reo)
Some Pools are constructed with the Reo structural steel to close to the surface. After several years of being in wet concrete the steel rusts and breaks through the surface. Rusting areas will be cutout and filled with Epoxy, Render or bogg

3 Cracks
Pools can crack due to settling, or structural defects. 
Varying size cracks require various repair technics. Small hairline cracks will be filled using the Vinyl Ester resin during the resurfacing process. Larger cracks will need to be filled with render/concrete very large crack will need stitching will stainless rods.

4 Etched, discoloured coating
After several years of being attacked by pool chemicals, surfaces start to become abrasive and prone to area growth.

  1. Water is pumped out  
  2. Hydrostatic Valve is removed  
  3. All drummy area are removed and filled  
  4. Coating is ground in perpetration of the application of the Fibreglass coating 
  5. Prime coat is applied 
  6. Fibreglass chopmatt is applied 
  7. Surface is ground 
  8. Vinyl Ester filler coat is applied 
  9. Surface is detailed 
  10. Aquaguard Top Coat is applied  
  11. Coating is cured for 7 days 
  12. Valve is fitted and the pool is filled

Resurfacing Fibreglass Pools in Detail

Fibreglass pools that are over 20 tears old will require resurfacing. Different makes of pools will require different amount and types of repairs prior to resurfacing with a new Fibreglass skin. The types of issue that can appear on a aged Fibreglass pool are:

1 Osmosis:
Osmosis is some times known as Fibreglass Cancer. It presents as Blisters of varying sizes from +-3mm to the size of a fist. Essentially Osmosis is blisters that contains contaminated water from the outside of the pool (very similar to a blister you would get on your skin) Under these blisters you will find rotted Fibreglass. These blisters will eventually crack and show small black/brown marks on the surface. Due to the high mineral content on these cracks algae forms, this is some times called black spot. As part of any resurfacing work it is imperative that the blisters be gouged out, removing the rotten Fibreglass. Then the cavity that is left should then be filled with a Vinyl Ester bogg.

2 Chalking
When the Top Coat (colour coat) breaks down, it will firstly become un-smooth then start to dissolve into a white powder.  
The Gelcoat will be ground back prior to the application of the Fibreglass resurfacing.

3 Crazing
Crazing is normally found on the surfaces that are exposed to the sun, normally on coping edges. Crazing will be ground back prior to the application of the Fibreglass resurfacing.

4 Flaking
Flaking is where small sections of Fibreglass come away from the rest of the surface. This is rarely found, but does appear on some makes of Fibreglass pools. Flaking will be ground back prior to the application of the Fibreglass resurfacing.

Restoring a Fibreglass Pool Step by Step 

  1. Pool is braced and the Hydrostatic Valve is removed then the water is pumped out 
  2. All Osmosis and rotten Fibreglass is ground out
  3. Top coat is ground in perpetration of the application of the Fibreglass coating
  4. Prime coat is applied
  5. Osmosis cavities are filled with Vinyl Ester bogg
  6. Surface is reground
  7. Fibreglass chopmatt is applied
  8. Surface is ground
  9. Application of Vinyl Ester filler coat is applied
  10. Surface is detailed
  11. Aquaguard Top Coat is applied 
  12. Coating is cured for 7 days
  13. Valve is fitted and the pool is half filled by water cartage
  14. Fill balance of pool water with hose
